Open Mic
October 12, 2009I’m starting to realize things about color I never really noticed before. For instance, you go to Wal-Mart and just about every kids toy is some form of neon. They are bright, joyful, and exciting. Then you go into an electronic section and hit all the pastels, metallics, and blacks that give them a more sleek fancy look. Why is it that sports cars are always shown as red, off road vehicles in earth tones?
Adding purpose behind color choice is fascinating. I’ve always been the type to go,”Ooh I like that!” and just throw whatever caught my eye into the mix, but now planning out the scheme to use makes the outcome look better and function better.

Week 2 Thoughts
September 7, 2009Space has been a big part of how I have designed in the past doing classes such as Drawing 1 & 3D Design at K-State Manhattan.

I used space in both of these projects. The pencil drawing to form a 3-D hallway, and the painting to show depth and the illusion of 3-dimensionality.

This was one of my favorite assignments in my Drawing 1 class. I spent 3 hours staring at paper bags, using positive and negative space to help give the bags their illusion of being 3D.
I think one of the major challenges that we face in New Media Design, is the task of fitting vast amounts of information and details into a small amount of viewing space. Computer games are what I enjoy, but I always have the feeling I’m missing something just outside of view of my monitor.
Chapter 4
September 7, 20091. A contour drawing is a drawing using lines to represent the “outside edges” of objects.
2. Variations in line thickness can make objects appear closer or farther away, or sharper or blurrier.
4. Hatching is the use of lines to create volume through shading.
